Trafigura says immediate action on decarbonisation is more important than ever because of increased emissions from ships plying longer routes around South Africa to avoid Red Sea attacks.
Research by the giant Swiss trader and shipowner estimated that an extra 200,000 barrels of fuel oil will be consumed by tankers alone this year as they divert around the Cape of Good Hope.
