Shipyard congestion has undone the 20-plus year correlation between tanker and LNG carrier orderbook.
With container ship earnings sky high, owners of those ships have rushed to build new capacity, effectively shutting out other types of vessels unless yards deem margins high enough, Evercore's Jonathan Chappell said on Monday.
He said the rising demand for LNG has made those vessels attractive to build, while tankers have lagged.
