Namibian authorities have impounded a mysterious Nigerian chemical carrier that has been anchored off the nation’s coast since the start of January.
Naval forces boarded Genesis Worldwide Shipping & Trading’s 15,500-dwt Ben K (ex-Patricia A, built 1980) on Friday and escorted the single-skinned vessel under armed guard to a facility in Walvis Bay, according to local media reports.
"At this point it is hard to tell what its reasons were to anchor in our space - but we can confirm that its automatic identification system (AIS) was disabled or non-functioning," naval operations chief Gottlieb Pandeni told reporters from New Era media today.
