Contact has taken place in the East China Sea between a North Korean tanker and a Dominican-flagged counterpart, according to Japan.
The maritime self-defense force confirmed that the two ships had 'come into contact' in the early hours of 20 January.
According to the ministry of foreign affairs, 'freight transport' may have taken place.
