Record bunker prices and a growing price spread between low and high-sulphur ship fuel are giving a huge advantage to owners with scrubber-fitted tonnage.
The global average price for very low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) is now $841 per tonne, with high-sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) bunkers at $625, as the war in Ukraine pushes oil above $110 per barrel.
This puts the fuel spread back above $200 per tonne for the first time since the IMO’s low-sulphur fuel regulations came into force at the start of 2020.
