In the context of global climate policy, the shipping industry is moving towards decarbonisation, including using cleaner fuel options, deploying green and smart technologies, and adopting low and zero carbon technologies. Ammonia is currently regarded as the most promising carbon-free fuel for the shipping industry, with broad potential applications.

The Ammonia Fuel Supply System (AFSS) belongs to the SunRui GasLink series of products and will be used by Qingdao Beihai Shipyard on 210,000 DWT bulk carriers. Known for safety and cost-effectiveness, SunRui intends to redefine ammonia-fueled ships.

Advantages of ammonia fuel

  • Easy to store and can be liquefied at ambient temperature under pressure (25°C, 1.03MPa) or at atmospheric low temperature (-33°C, 0.103MPa)
  • It is sufficiently supplied worldwide. Generation capacity globally is around 180 million tons per year, and more than 120 ports are equipped with ammonia bunkering infrastructure
  • Ammonia's explosion-proof performance is superior, and its octane rating is higher than other alternative marine fuels such as LNG, methanol and hydrogen
  • Ammonia used as marine fuel is also competitive in reducing cost. The price of ammonia fuel is relatively lower than LNG or methanol.

SunRui has expedited the development of clean energy supply systems by making continuous advancements in research and development, and technical research. With significant breakthroughs in key technologies such as liquid ammonia filling, storage, fuel supply, ammonia treatment and electrical control, SunRui successfully developed the GasLink AFSS. Advantages in safety, design and low maintenance costs resulted in the AFSS becoming an industry leading product.
