When South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) announced in mid-July that an unidentified US owner had ordered two 50,000-dwt product tankers, observers quickly pointed in a somewhat surprising direction.

Florida-based Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) quickly acknowledged it was behind the $74m order for delivery in the second half of 2019.

While OSG has a long history of ordering at South Korean yards that dates back to its days as one of the world’s biggest operators of internationally trading tankers.
