Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has revealed a new structure to its shipbuilding business and is promising to extend collaboration with compatriot yards that many believe will lead to consolidation.
MHI says the new structure will create two wholly owned subsidiaries that will jointly employ 1,600 workers and start up in January.
The main company will be based in Yokohama and focus on ship design, research and development, and ferry construction at MHI’s Shimonoseki plant.
