An unexpected jump in LNG newbuildings orders during the usually quiet third quarter has shunted this year's orderbook tally closer to 40 ships, amid suggestions that the total could climb to 50 vessels by the end of December.
Equipment suppliers and shipbrokers say more than 35 LNG carriers have now been contracted as shipowners new to LNG enter the arena and existing owners extend their play.
