Iran's defence ministry is in the process of ordering 83 new ships that will mainly renew the country's passengership fleet.
Press TV cited Mohammad Rastad, head of the Port and Maritime Organization of Iran (PMO), as saying that the contracts are worth $280m.
Deals with domestic shipbuilders have already been signed for 40 vessels, with talks continuing over another 43.
