India's shipping ministry has threatened jail terms for those involved in the unsafe recycling of vessels.
It has proposed a bill that will make it mandatory for breakers to work to global standards.
Any violations could attract a fine of INR 1m ($15,500) and six-months imprisonment, the Economic Times reported.
The law would mirror the IMO's Hong Kong Convention on scrapping, the ministry said.
