The ship scrapping sector is again being strangled by a lack of financing in the main recycling centres of Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The Bangladesh market was hit last summer when the central bank tightened up the criteria for issuing credit to scrap buyers. In January, Pakistan was affected by similar restrictions.
“Bangladesh has found old problems returning with the restrictions surrounding the foreign exchange and opening of letters of credit resurfacing,” said shipbroker Clarksons.
