Maersk Group’s plan to start scrapping ships on the beaches of Alang, India has won the backing of one of the world’s top cash-buyers.

Singapore-based Wirana Shipping said it welcomes Maersk’s decision to initiate engagement with four Hong Kong Convention (HKC) compliant shipbreaking yards in Alang.

“This is a positive step in the right direction and this decision will have a long term impact on motivating other yards to work towards HKC compliance as well as overall growth of business at Alang Ship Recycling facilities,” said Wirana chief executive Rakesh Khetan.
