The disposal of the 523,178-cbf Honduras Star (built 1992) was announced in April.
But Siem said on Wednesday the unnamed buyer had failed to pay the $6m purchase price within the contractually agreed period.
This will result in the loss of its deposit and prompt a claim against the buyer for damages, it added.
The deal would have given Siem a profit of $0.4m.
