George Economou is said to be purchasing a newbuilding bulker from Malta's Berkeley Shipping.
Market sources say the Greek shipowner's private Cardiff Marine is paying $26m for the 81,600-dwt BSI Lennox.
Neither company could be immediately reached to confirm the deal after business hours in Athens and Valetta.
