The government has agreed to purchase two 64,000-dwtvessels at a total cost of $70m, local news reports say.
Both ships will be delivered from an unnamed shipyard in twoyears.
Ceylon Shipping Corporation owns a pair of ageing multipurposecargo ships, including the 11,325-dwt Lanka Mahapola (built 1983).
