Authorities in the US appear to be cracking down on masters suspected of operating vessels while under the influence of alcohol.
Two ships were detained by the US Coast Guard (USCG) in recent weeks after administering field sobriety tests that indicated captains had blood alcohol content levels of around 0.27 percent, well above the legal limit of .04.
The 7,455-teu Hanjin Baltimore (built 2005) was held at the port that shares its surname when inspectors found the master was “intoxicated and unfit for duty to perform essential shipboard procedures”, according to a detention report.
