A US Coast Guard helicopter winched the 55 year old crewman from the 2442-teu Jupiter (built 2001) and evacuated him to a San Diego hospital.
The fire on the Martime Gesellschaft vessel was extinguished by other crewmen enabling the ship to continue its voyage to the Mexican port of Mazatlan.
The injured seafarer is reported to have sustained third degree burns.
A photo on the website of Martime Gesellschaft shows the vessel in the livery of China Shipping Lines but the current charterer appears to be Hapag-Lloyd.
