The Haiphong Sea Product-owned 5,900-dwt Sunrise 689 (built 2012) vanished 40 minutes after it left port last Thursday.
It was carrying 5,226 tonnes of products and was scheduled to arrive in Quang Tri province on Sunday, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Vietnamese authorities have launched a search operation for the missing tanker.
Officials said the circumstances of disappearance are still unclear, adding that piracy has not been ruled out.
