The Swire group has replaced the container lashing system on eight Japanese built containerships following a high profile casualty nearly two years ago.
An Australian Transport Safety Bureau final report on an oil spill and loss of containers from the 24,000-dwt multipurpose vessel Pacific Adventurer (built 1991) found that much of the lashing equipment was in poor condition with its failure one of the factors in the casualty.
“The poor condition of much of the ship’s container lashing equipment indicates that the inspection and maintenance regime applied to this critical equipment had been inadequate,” the report warns.
