A massive effort to prevent further pollution from the wrecked Costamare containership Rena seems to be succeeding.

A Svitzer salvage team is preparing to pump the last fuel oil from the 3,032-teu Rena (built 1990) hard aground on the Astrolabe Reef in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty.

Installing the hoses and pumps to empty the final tank of the Rena.
Bad weather has been hampering efforts to remove the 1,733 tonnes of oil on the vessel when it grounded but conditions have now improved and Maritime New Zealand is hopeful that the final 360 tonnes of oil in the starboard No 5 tank will be successfully pumped over to the barge, Awanuia.
