According to the US Coast Guard (USCG) the 463,700-cbf Santa Lucia (built 1999) reported the incident to watchstanders at approximately 4:30 am.
In a statement the organisation said the vessel was transporting fresh produce to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when it ran aground.
When contacted by TradeWinds a USCG spokeswoman said no pollution or injuries were reported but admitted she did not know whether the reefer was damaged.
