In March 2013 an engineer aboard the Laskaridis-controlled 82,000-dwtbulker Nireas (built 2012) died off the port of Gladstone during the vessel’s maidenvoyage.
He was draining water from an air receiver when anobservation window exploded, sending debris flying toward the man, theAustralian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) reports.
The Ukrainian man was found unconscious a short timelater, but died before a rescue helicopter reached the vessel.
