Poor maintenance has been blamed for an engine room fire aboard a Japanese-owned capesize bulker off Australia in July 2014.

The incident occurred on the Mitsubishi Corp 207,300-dwt Marigold (built 1990) while it was loading iron ore at Port Hedland.

According to the report from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) firefighting by the ship’s crew included activating the Halon gas fixed fire suppression system for the engine room.
