According to reports, the 4,239-cbm Teknogas (built 1991) was en route from Vietnam to Indonesia.
Its last AIS position was on 7 June in the South China Sea, sailing at a speed of 9.6 knots, data from marinetraffic.com shows.
The reason why the ship issued a distress signal still remains unclear.
Singaporean authorities have requested all vessels in the vicinity to keep a sharp lookout for the missing vessel.
