A Greek controlled ro-ro is being held by the Indian authorities at Calcutta over alleged irregularities relating to an arms cargo.

The move has ostensibly been triggered by Indian concerns that the arms might reach terrorists although it looks as if the problem has arisen from deficiencies in documentation.

The Indian authorities are discharging cargo from the 9,700-gt Aegean Glory (built 1978) to check against documentation supplied by the ship’s agent.

There seems to be no dispute that the ship was carrying arms including rocket launchers, anti-aircraft guns and other military hardware but it appears to have been a legitimate cargo consigned by the UN mission in Liberia.
