Armed guards had to fend off a hijacking attempt on a small US-flagged vessel as pirates opened fire and clambered onboard on Tuesday, TradeWinds has learned.

The assault on the motor boat Capricorn east of Socotra came amidst rumours of another yacht with 30 Britons onboard being hijacked off Kenya and after pirates captured two pleasure craft recently, murdering four American crew members.

Six armed pirates opened fire on the boat around 550 miles east of the Yemeni island of Socotra early on Tuesday, the International Maritime Bureau wrote in a report without identifying the vessel.
