An Excel Maritime Carriers bulker has become the latest victim of pirates deep in the Indian Ocean.
Somewhat ironically the seizure of the 70,200-dwt Renuar (built 1993) came on the same day that pirates released an almost identical bulker also owned by a Greek-based and US-listed company.
Pirates in two skiffs supported by a mother vessel subjected the Greek panamax to a sustained assault for some two and a half hours 1,050 miles from the Somali coast on Saturday morning, counter-piracy force EU NAVFOR wrote in a statement.
