Willem de Ruiter, head of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), is to leave the organisation that he took to Lisbon in 2003.
He will depart in November having finished two five-year terms.
Leendert Bal, current head of operations, will take over until the recruitment process for his successor has run its course.
De Ruiter was born in the Netherlands in 1951 and graduated from university in 1975 having studied civil engineering and transport economics.
