A spokesman for Bernhard SchulteShipmanagement, the manager of the 16,750-cbm LPG carrier Golden Miller(ex-Fezzano, built 1993), says the project will include the replacement ofcompressors that were in the room where theblaze is believed to have originated.

The extent of damage to the rest of the vesselis unclear and the public relations firm assigned to the case has not disclosedwhich shipyard has been chosen to perform the repairs but recently indicated thata search for local candidates is well underway.

While an operation aimed at cleaning upfuel oil and lubricants that leaked into the ocean as a result of the blast concludedjust last week, local news outlets claim native fisherman are still seeing signsof the spill on the surface of the water, vegetation and beaches.

In a recent statement posted on BernhardSchulte’s website it described the environmental impact of the casualty as “minimal”and was quick to point out that residual waste that was not removed by theclean-up team is “expected to dissipate naturally”.

A spokesman also mentioned the lone crewmanwho was injured by the blast has returned to work and confirmed the vessel’scompressors must be repaired before it can leave Brazil but has not yet issuedan update about a local investigation into the cause of the incident.

According to the Docks Company of the Stateof Bahia (CODEBA), the operator of the terminal where the casualty took place, severalagencies are involved in a probe that will likely determine whether penaltieswill be imposed against the ship’s owner, manager or crew.

The Golden Miller is flagged in the Bahamas, classed by American Bureau of Shipping and maintains protection-and-indemnity coverage with Standard P&I Club, according to Equasis and other reputable shipping industry databases.
