Heavy swell and high winds have halted anti-pollution measures on the grounded Rena.
Salvors were attempting to pump bunker fuel from the after section of the ship to a bunker barge.
But 30-knot winds and a two to four meter swell have forced the barge Awanuia to let go its mooring ropes and fuel transfer lines.
The Rena’s watertight doors and manholes were secured and the salvors went ashore.
