Port fees on Chinese-linked vessels would hurt the US economy with higher shipping costs and congestion, a Bimco official warns.
Lars Robert Pedersen, deputy secretary general of the shipowners’ group, told US trade representative Jamieson Greer that the proposal’s impact on Chinese maritime dominance is less clear, although it is the stated goal of the potential fees.
The warning came in a debate on an online government docket ahead of a hearing scheduled for Monday to consider fees on Chinese-built and operated tonnage.
