The 10,300-dwt Savvy(built 2005) was underway 30 nautical miles north-east of Horsburgh Lighthouse in the early hours when a group of about 10 men approached and boarded the vessel from two high-speed boats, the Recaap piracy information centre said.
Armed with guns and knives, they boarded the ship using a portable ladder on the poop deck.
The master raised the alarm, carried out evasive manoeuvres and sealed all access from inside leading to the accommodation blocks/engine room.
