The men were convicted of hijacking Komrowski’s 925–teu boxship Taipan (built2007) off the Horn of Africa in 2010.
In Germany’s first modern-day piracy trial, the judge rejected the defendants'claim that they had been forced into the attack.
The men had hoped to extort a ransom of at least $1m, judge Bernd Steinmetztold the Hamburg state court.
"You were each going to get a share of that, even if it was only goingto be a small share," Steinmetz said.
