A bid to free the hijacked Dynacom tanker Smyrni off Somalia has failed.
Local sources said an attempt was made on Sunday by the Puntland marine police force (PMPF), which attacked the 157,000-dwt ship (built 2011) using speed boats.
Pirates defended the vessel, firing on police and forcing them to withdraw.
It is unclear whether there were any casualties.
A total of 26 crew are on the Greek ship, which was seized in May.
