The 51,000-dwt Pioneer Ship Management vessel (built 2008) was freed by the Nigerian navy in less than a day on Wednesday.
Master Arun Chandran told local reporters: "We departed Lagos around 7pm, heading for Savannah, United States.
"But at 10:40pm, one of my men sighted four boats each with five heavily-armed men. Some minutes later, two of the men came on board, but by then we had run into the citadel, which is a safe room.
