The 75,000-dwt Energy Centurion (built 2008), carrying gasoil and registered in the Isle of Man, was attacked on Tuesday morning at anchorage 17 miles off Lome, Greece's shipping ministry confirmed.
The hijackers exchanged fire with a patrol boat that answered a distress call, but evaded their pursuers.
The IMB said the usual tactic of pirates in the area is to hold vessels for around five days and steal the cargo.
