In another sign of the escalating problem of piracy in West Africa, the crewman was killed as gunmen boarded the 47,000-dwt Pyxis Delta (built 2006) on Monday, according to the Philippines department of foreign affairs.
Assistant secretary Raul Hernandez said the man was rushed to the nearest hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.
The hostage-taking situation was reportedly resolved quickly, although details remain sketchy.
