Manohar Parrikar told reporters that pirates are now 450 nautical miles away from the country.
He explained that the gangs have moved 30 to 40 miles east because their shipping lanes are heavily guarded.
“They may not be next to India but we are watchful and careful,” Parrikar said.
Last night, two piracy incidents happened within six hours off Singapore.
Somali pirates have been active in the Indian Ocean and especially in the Gulf of Aden.
