German press reports suggest that a portion of Somali pirate’s ransom is being extorted by terrorist organisations such as al-Qaeda and al-Shabaab.
Bild reports that these groups are demanding money from seaborne criminals to support terrorism.
But talk of financial support from pirates is not new. In 2006, a spokesman for the US 5th fleet in Bahrain raised the spectre of al-Qaeda cells operating in Somalia hijacking a ship and using it as a weapon.
