The38,431-dwt Nord Nightingale (built 2008) is said to have been approached andboarded by three individuals at Jakarta tanker anchorage.
Detailsof the incident, which took place earlier this month, come in the latest piracyreport from security consultants AKE Maritime.
TradeWindsunderstands that the crew of the Danish-flagged tanker was alerted to theirpresence and the assailants retreated empty handed.
Shipownersoperating in Indonesia face one of the highest chances of a piracy attack inthe world where around one-third of sea crimes occur.
“Regularattacks continue to take place in Indonesian and littoral waters, with a mixedresponse from the authorities. It is also likely that a lot of attacks aregoing unreported,” said AKE Maritime.
Almostall attacks are opportunistic ‘smash and grab’ type robberies on vessels inport or at anchor, according to AKE intelligence analyst Rory Lamrock.
Latestfigures from the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) show that 68 low-levelattacks tok place off Indonesia in the first nine months of 2013.
TradeWinds recently reported that Indonesia had seen a surge in robbery attempts in the firstweek of October with at least one incident per day.
Key anchoragesat Karimun, Nipah and Santan appear to be the main targets, while authoritiesat Gresik and Dumai have urged vessels to exercise caution.
