An Iranian destroyer has opened heavy fire against pirates in order to protect an oil tanker under attack.
Local news agency Fars reports the Jamaran naval ship conducted the operation after seven pirate boats tried to attack the vessel earlier today.
It cited Habibollah Sayari, commander of the Iranian navy.
There is no more information about the tanker or the location of the incident.
