The country’s ministry of defence said the incident involved a ship named as Manjin Cild on 3 November.
The vessel appealed for help to the warship Hetman Sahaydachniy because it was being pursued by a small high-speed craft.
The ministry said when the frigate approached, the smaller boat gave up the chase and disappeared.
It added this was the first Ukrainian operation in the region.
