The UK hearing into the death of ship surveyor David Mockett, 64, recorded a verdict of unlawful killing.
It again raises questions over exactly what happened when Greece's 150,000-dwt Brillante Virtuoso (built 1992) came under attack off Yemen on 5 July last year, with a UK police officer claiming Mockett had stood up to a gang profiting from false reports of pirate raids.
