The incident took place on an unnamed Malaysian vessel near Batam last Wednesday, when 10 men attempted to board in the early hours.
According to a representative of the shipping company from Jalan Matang, the captain reported some certificates and licences were stolen.
But the 12 crew managed to hold six of the robbers.
The vessel was due to dock in Kuching, Malaysia, over the weekend.
