A Shipping Corp of India (SCI) ferry has had to return to port after a generator stopped working.
The 9,700-gt Harsha Vardhana (built 1974) was stranded at sea off Visakhapatnam for six hours on Wednesday following the fault.
The Port Blair-bound vessel has now returned for repairs.
The Hindu daily said the ship had 500 passengers on board. There was some panic on the vessel when it was stopped at sea.
