Italy has banned big cruiseships from Venice's historic but fragile city centre.
Reuters reported that vessels of more than 100,000 gt will be barred.
They will instead have to take a less scenic route to the port of Marghera.
The new legislation follows a temporary restriction put in place three years ago after concerns that huge ships were damaging the city's shallow lagoons and canals.
