Fresh from the successful IPO of spin-off Seadrill Partners the driller has penned a preliminary deal to take a Songa semi-submersible.
Both the potential buyer and seller are keeping quiet about what value has been placed on the Songa Eclipse.
Seadrill says it has until 15 November to see the purchase through.
On Friday Seadrill Partners saw its market value shoot up after bagging $175m from its float.
