James Hughes-Hallett, the former chairman of Hong Kong’s Swire Group and Clarkson, has died after a long illness at the age of 70.
Educated at Eton and Oxford, Hughes-Hallett joined the diversified trading and transport Swire group in 1976 and rose to lead it for 10 years from 2005. He became chairman of the London-listed shipbroker in 2015.
Ill health forced him to step down from leading Clarkson in 2018 although he continued as a non-executive director.
