Private Chinese and Japanese shipbuilders’ attempts to sell newbuildings designed to dated emissions standards are set to put shipping’s commitment to the environment to the test.
The final few remaining newbuilding keels registered before 2016 — allowing vessels to be built to the Marpol NOx emission Tier II standard and trade to North America and Caribbean — are now being negotiated for sale with owners.
